Education
Our
philosophy is that it makes little sense to save animals
if we don't also do everything we can to help reduce the
abuse that brings these animals to us. To that end, we run
a number of educational programs here at the farm that are
geared to promoting mutual appreciation between two-leggeds
and four-leggeds. From group programs to individual
programs, our purpose is simple -- a child that learns to
respect and value animals will in turn learn to respect
and value himself, and a child who respects and values himself
does not need to abuse.
During
the school year, we run several highly successful programs
for kids at risk in conjunction with area schools. We have found that,
by putting damaged kids together with damaged animals, we
are achieving remarkable results on both sides. In
addition, we run a number of year-round court-ordered community
service programs, with equally excellent results. We also offer programs for special needs kids, kids in transition,
and kids dealing with trauma. And we offer programs
for school groups doing community service.
We
feature opportunities for organizations to participate as
well. From the Daisies to Roots and Shoots to the
Boys and Girls Club to the Eagle Scouts, we provide projects
to fit almost any requirement. On
weekends, we provide an opportunity for families to come
together and share time with the animals. And
we are always open for individual and group tours of the
farm.
In
July and August, we have offered our Summer Program, weekly sessions
for 9-14-year-olds that encourage good citizenship by teaching
kids what taking responsibility for an animal really means,
from the bottom up – feeding, medicating, cleaning,
rehabilitating, with emphasis on understanding the real
impact of abuse. Graduates of the program have become volunteers at the farm on a regular basis.
Each year, over three hundred children participate in Furrytale programs.
